open62541 and the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)
Manufacturers who integrate open62541 into their products inherit several obligations under the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). The CRA makes the manufacturer responsible for the security, maintenance, and documentation of the final product, including all third-party components such as open-source libraries.
Under the CRA, a crucial distinction exists between a manufacturer and an open-source steward:
- Manufacturer: The manufacturer is the entity that places the final product on the EU market. If the product contains digital elements, then the manufacturer must declare conformity with the CRA as part of the obligatory CE marking.
- Steward: An open-source steward develops and maintains a software component, but does not place a finished product on the market and therefore does not assume CRA obligations.
Without a commercial relationship, the open-source steward is only responsible for best-effort community maintenance, with no guaranteed timelines, support periods, or patch availability. However, through commercial support the steward can commit to processes and SLAs that manufacturers need to reliably fulfill their CRA obligations.
As the stewards of the open62541 library, our CRA-ready support provides the necessary artifacts, processes, and long-term maintenance to help manufacturers meet their CRA-obligations efficiently and with confidence.
